Tapping into the Collective Conscious

As a kid, did you ever play the game where you started a story by saying one sentence and a friend or sibling would continue by saying another sentence and another friend or a sibling would continue by saying another and so on? The story would take on a life of its own, and its end product would be a result of its countless contributors.

Well, I would like to do that, but virtually. Click on COMMENTS at the end of this post and you will see the first sentence and subsequent sentences to what will hopefully become a published book. I would like you to write the next sentence.

My hope is that we would be able to get collaborators from every corner of the world to contribute a sentence to the book. The more global, the better!

Now, here’s where the something BIGGER part comes in: I envision publishing this book and directing the proceeds from the sales of its publication to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The Global Fund (http://www.theglobalfund.org) was created to dramatically increase resources to fight these devastating diseases, which kill over 6 million people each year.

The only rules are these:

* Write a sentence in the COMMENTS section that logically follows the one before it. (It could be a one-word sentence. It could be a 20-word sentence. No contribution is too big or too small.) Have fun! Purposefully, I have not designated a theme or tonality to this book. It’s up to us to develop the plot, one person and one sentence at a time.

* When you post, please include the following information: your name (if you don't want to include your last name, that's cool), age, city and country, and who you would like to dedicate the book to and why (in 10 words or less). You will see that I have done so in mine.

* Finally, pass this link along to anyone who you think would like to contribute.

As with any book, there needs to be a deadline. So, I’m setting the deadline to be midnight EST on World Aids Day (Dec. 1, 2007).

I encourage you to check back periodically to track the progress. And encourage your friends to visit.

Thanks in advance!

As she stepped onto the front porch, she gazed upon the world she had built over the years upon which life and death, happiness and sadness, laughter and tears, triumph and defeat would from time to time flow like a raging river overwhelming her; yet she embraced it with open arms for she knew that no matter how sweet or bitter life may have been this was the place she loved her husband, raised their children and saw the future in the eyes of their children's children.

She opens the envelope to only find a poem that started with "So this is Heaven". She reads outloud " Where everyone longs to be.. Surrounded by millions of angels, but my angel is not here with me.. i can see your face so clearly, i can still feel your touch.. your tears are breaking my heart, your smile is what i miss so much.. Keep on smiling forever, Live, Love and dream.. Its how ive always known you, so never let go of your gleam.. yes i promised to love you till death do us part.. But this is all untrue, it is but a lie.. cause until now im screaming i adore you from deep within my heart.. i'm sure you can hear me, please heal the wound inside.. allow me to send you an angel, to protect you and stay by your side.. Be happy where ever you are, laugh, sing and dance.. watching you from heaven is by far the sweetest romance.. The world may be tough to handle, sometimes too painful to bare.. Lucy! It suddenly dawned on her that Lucy was the only person Sam would have trusted enough with their secret...which would explain the yellow ribbon...how could she have forgotten the significance of the yellow ribbon? It was that same ribbon that bound the next note she found on her doorstep, instructing her to go to China- and so here she was again after so many years...she looked nervously at her watch, in a couple of hours it would be four...would she manage to catch even a glimpse of him this time, would she recognise him she wondered, after all he had only just been born when she saw him last.

As she walked down those streets, she remembered a page of a book she had received from Sam. Lucy had given it to her many years later. It contained a paragraph from a book that would be written many years in the future called Shantaram. He had scrawled across the page I love you, just as much as he loved Karla.

She still remembered what the paragraph on the page had read. 'I love you, Karla,' I said when we were alone again. 'I loved you the first second i saw you. I think i've loved you for as long as there's been love in the world. I love your voice. I love your face. I love your hands. I love everything you do, and i love the way you do everything. It feels like magic when you touch me. I love the way your mind works, and the things you say. And even though it's all true, all that, i don't really understand it, and i can't explain it - to you or to myself. I just love you. I just love you with all my heart. You do what God should do: you give me a reason to live. You give me a reason to love the world.'

The approaching man was wearing Wellington boots, a traditional fisherman’s Macintosh over a pullover and faded jeans with the hood pulled up over his head to protect him from the impending rain. She tried to see if she could see his face, but the hood was pulled down and he walked with his head lowered, she could make out a square set jaw and the remnant of a half smoked cigarette clenched between his lips with the tip occasionally glowing brightly as he drew on it. As he got closer, he took the cigarette out of his mouth and tossed it onto the ground, “Are you Annie?” he said.
She said nothing, her mind was racing – who is he? Do I know him? What does he want?
Annie could smell the smoke on his breath as he up to her and he asked her again……”You Annie?”
She took a deep breathe squared her shoulders and said, “I am, who wants to know?”.

"and this is all because of that day, that tragic day. Life is so fragile" she said. "If only I had never accepted that invitation to go sailing, I knew a storm was coming but i chose to ignore it. He was just so handsome in that navy blue shirt and his green eyes so hipnotic that I could never had refused... If only I could, I wouldn't have waken up on a desert beach after that horrible storm, with that bruise in my head so big it was almost imposible to be cured by Unababwe, the tribe chief"

It was only a matter of minutes following Annie's last spoonful of food that her mind began racing with thoughts of escaping from this misery. Should I steal Nurse Raquel's uniform and slip out the employee exit....

Mayra said...

...Yes that's it. That is my only way out. Rob at the security desk has nodded off as usual and everyone else is asleep.

Annie couldn't wait any longer to be free from the smelly nursing home. They watched her too closely here. One nurse gave her the eye all the time, like she was a deadly felon, instead of a worn out woman who'd lived too long. It was time to go. Crouching, she stealthily crept to her door, and headed down the hallway. Slowly, slowly, and suddenly she was free! Out of the fetid odor of that sickhouse and into the fresh air!

But, horridly her past came back to haunt the minute she got a wiff of the clean freshing air. She recalled the fright of witnessing her father performing surgery on the family's transexual pig, her favorite pet.

Anonymous said...

The clean, fresh air and quiet of night made the flashback seem all too real.

But, moments later another flashback occurred. This time it included her drug addicted son, who sold the shoes off her feet to support his habit.

Years have passed since she seen her estranged son. Being coup up in the nursing didn't allow for much time to enable his drug habit. Though she was distracted by other events that occurred at what supposed to be her sanctuary. She remembered the Nurse Aide that attended to her during her last birthday party. She shoved so much caked down her throat and refused to give her water. She went to sleep that night choking on cake. Her pampers was also drenched with unrine in so much that you could it in the hallway. Her diarrhea had finally subsided from eating the cake, but no one responded to her call to provide care. She wept all night helplessly.

Between flashbacks, she remembered Jack, her roommate in college. What about his life? He became a high class veterinarian. Last time she heard of him was 2 years ago. He moved to South America... Argentina? Chile? Maybe Brazil? Then she realized that, her life was what she pretended her life to be. Just that. Going to South America sounds like a good break.

Then, she started to walk around in her bedroom, the one she had shared for years with Sam, stopping by the big mirror in front of her bed. She stared at herself, the beauty she had was starting to fade away, and she noticed some age marks around her lips and her big green eyes. She look at her stomach, caressing it, thinking about this new life that was growing inside of her.."I know now, I'm sure I'm pregnant".

Yes, the love I have for this child will cure all, she thought at the time. Annie recalled the joy she felt when she delivered the news to her beloved Sam. “I just know it’s a boy. I just know it,” she said, her smile—as always—ever so slight. “We’ll name him Sam Jr.”

Why is it that when a heart is on fire and is withering away, there is neither smoke nor ashes? How does life just go on? Why does time not stop and give us the much needed reprise to sweep away the ashes, to air out the smoke, to catch our breath; before we face the world and ourselves again? Why doesn't it matter that to the world that I'm losing my world? I thought we were all connected in some way and someone would see what I'm going through without me having to spell it out - six degrees of separation they say? Its more like 1000 years of solitude..

...just let it be! Memories will keep flooding me but I must realize that Sam is history and Sam Jr. is just an illusion...but I am here, in this moment, she thought. Back there in the nursing home, life did feel like drawing towards the end but the fact of the matter is it has not ended yet. She recalled a line she had read somewhere years ago, "If you're still alive, it means your mission on earth is not finished yet." Feeling a new vigour in her, she started to walk past the sleeping neighborhood towards the beautiful small house she once shared with Sam.

And with those memories came the dank smell of the puddle stained basement with its cracked wood paneling that lined the hallway into the laundry room out back. A montage of random items flashed through her mind: the ceiling high pile of beat-up paint cans; the rusty old wheel barrel in the corner; and the huge brass door knob of the tiny closet where it all began.
